Hey everyone! Today instead of a recipe, I want to show you all (in a few step-by-step photos) how I made this floral cupcake cake.
I made this together with my mom for a friend of a friend recently, which was super fun! Since closing my cake business, I don’t have as many opportunities to makes cakes. Yet, through my family’s bakery, and the occasional friend asking for a cake, I get to continue helping out here and there. I’m really glad about that! I love making cakes, and it’s good to keep my skills up to date.
Believe it or not, that “cake” is actually made of cupcakes! 2 dozen cupcakes arranged together in the shape of a “1” for a baby girl’s first birthday.
Here’s How It Came Together
Once I had figured out how I wanted to configure their shape, I dabbed a little bit of buttercream frosting onto the bottom of each cupcake and “stuck” it to the board (I used a full-slab sized cake board for this). From there, I used a piping bag and large star tip to fill in the gaps between the cupcakes and pipe the crisp outline of the number “1” around them.
Next, I spread a generous layer of buttercream over the whole thing, like frosting the surface of a large cake.
Next, I piped a finished edge of shells around the outside, again using my large star tip.
And then finally, to finish it, I used some little sugar blossoms that I had previous made with a silicone mould and edible pearls, along with some hand-piped roses (made on a flower nail), swirls, leaves, and stars.
And that was it! The family bakery did the baking, I did the decorating, and together we made this beautiful arrangement happen for sweet baby Isadora. I was delighted to be a part of it!
I hope this serves as some good inspiration for you!
Bye for now,
Naomi
