Christmas, Crafts, DIY, Family, Holidays, Miscellaneous / Tuesday, December 19th, 2023

Here’s a really simple Christmas craft idea for kids, which you can have them make themselves or you can make for them: Paper cone snack cups. These adorable Christmas cones are perfect for movie nights, snacks in the car to go see Christmas lights, or any other occasion that calls for a special treat.

My inspiration

As a kid, I remember my mom and dad doing so many little things for us that made such a lasting and joyous impression. I grew up in a family with 12 kids, and we never had a ton of money – But Christmas always (to me) seemed plentiful, and like the good things just kept on coming. I remember one year in particular, each of us getting a jumbo sized peppermint stick to suck on while we drove around a wealthy neighbourhood looking at the beautiful light displays. It’s memories like that which have stuck with me and continue to inspire me to want to create special outings and memories for my little ones.

Where did this idea come from specifically?

I had this idea after visiting the beautiful Christmas markets in Germany when I lived there several years back. When you visit the European Christmas markets, it seems like the air is full of the smells of candied nuts and cinnamon, and often when you purchase a treat, such as candy coated nuts or soft gingerbread, they will give them to you in a large paper cone, something like these.

Are these paper cones easy to make?

Yes! You literally just bend the paper into the right shape and tape it into place. I’m guessing you can tell that just by looking at the pictures, but honestly this is such a simple craft and so quick to whip together!

What goes inside of them?

The first time I made them I just kept it simple with popcorn. Anything will work, though! Chocolate, cookies, popcorn, candied nuts, chips, Chicago Mix (I’ve been craving this lately)… Honestly whatever you’re feeling.

What are some good ideas for using a paper cone cup at Christmas time?

My idea was to make them for a trip in the car to go see Christmas lights, which we did recently– and they loved it! We make an outing of that with our kids every December, and this is such a fun way to make it more special. Here’s a few more ideas though, in case you need some convincing that making these are a good idea:

  • Bring them in the car to go see Christmas lights
  • Serve up some snacks in them for holiday movie nights
  • Use them for Christmas party favours or snacks
  • Spend an afternoon working on this fun kids’ craft idea
  • Fill them with treats and wrap them in cellophane for inexpensive, beautiful gifts
  • Bring them to your neighbours filled with little chocolates and a Merry Christmas note

…There’s just a few! I’m sure you could get creative and make many more uses of them.

Here’s what you will need:

…And that’s literally it!

Step 2:

Roll the cone up, with the torn edge of the paper in the base of the cone. You can fiddle with this as you like to make it look tidy.

What would you use these cones cups for? Or what are some of your favourite childhood memories of Christmas?

I would love to hear about it.

Thanks for stopping in!
