Easy 5-Ingredient Peach Cobbler Without a Cake Mix [Recipe]

Well everyone, it’s that time of year again and it’s time for me to show you all how to make this easy peach cobbler recipe from scratch. This is one of my favorite peach recipes to make during peach season: it is a melt-in-your-mouth delicious dessert, made with just five simple ingredients!

If you love peach baked goods, this recipe is for you. Similar to peach pie, it’s warm, sweet, just a bit tangy, and so, so yummy. It can be served all on its own or topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

What is peach cobbler?

Peach cobbler is an American dessert made with sliced peaches and topped with a butter/sugar/flour mixture to make a crumble topping. The look of the topping scattered onto the top of the peaches is similar to a cobblestone path, which is where the name comes from.

How to make peach cobbler crust

Like most things, there are a number of ways to make peach cobbler, and the main difference between them is the crust on top. I’ve seen peach cobbler made as I have here, with a sweet and buttery crumble topping, or else I’m aware of it being made with a cake-like topping (from a box of cake mix or a homemade batter poured on top), a biscuit topping, a sugar cookie topping, or even a pie crust topping.

In this recipe, I like to make my crust with equal amounts of flour and sugar mixed with butter and vanilla. This mixture, crumbled on top and baked, becomes a golden brown, crunchy, buttery topping that makes a perfect complement to sweet summer peaches.

Peach cobbler fruit filling

The best part about this simple recipe is that the fruit filling (ie, the sweet peaches on the bottom), have no additional sugar added. This is my favorite recipe because you get the real, natural sweetness of the peaches to shine on their own – without adding extra unnecessary sugar.

Making perfect peach cobbler

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when making the best peach cobbler. While it’s true that this is one of those easy recipes that’s hard to mess up, it’s also true that using the right ingredients can make a big difference in the finished product. Here are a few notes on how to make this delicious homemade peach cobbler.

Bake with fresh peaches

For this recipe, you’ll want to use real peaches, not canned peaches. A can of peaches contains sugar already in its syrup, and it’s been pre-cooked during the canning process, making the peaches both sweeter and softer. To make your own peach cobbler from scratch, I recommend getting some fresh juicy peaches (right from a farm, if you can).

Use real butter

For the best flavor, use real butter instead of a butter substitute (like margarine). I like to use salted butter for the salty/sweet contrast, or unsalted butter with a generous pinch of salt added. This recipe calls for 1/2 of a stick of butter (4 Tbsp), softened. I do not recommend making this with melted butter, since the topping will lose some of its cobblestone texture (it will become much softer when it is made with melted butter).

Brown vs. White sugar

This recipe calls for white sugar, which makes a much paler looking topping (which I think is really pretty). Brown sugar works just as well, however, and will give a slightly more caramel color and flavor. Either way, once the cobbler is done, either sugar will make a golden topping with a delicious crunchy texture and sweet flavor.

The best kind of flour to use

Honestly, I just use all purpose flour (either regular or unbleached). I’ve seen self-rising flour used in peach cobbler recipe elsewhere, but that is not necessary in this recipe. Any white flour will work well for this, including organic white flour or bread flour.

Vanilla

I like to add a bit of vanilla to my cobbler topping, just to give it that extra special touch. You can also add a little cinnamon or nutmeg to give it that warm, spiced flavor (if desired).

How to make peach cobbler in a Dutch oven

I like to make my peach cobbler in a simple glass baking dish, but you can use a dutch oven, roasting pan, or casserole dish just as well. For this recipe, follow the directions exactly as listed below, keeping the dish uncovered so that the cobbler can brown and become crispy on top.

Can you freeze peach cobbler?

Yes! This is one of the best things to make and freeze ahead of time. I recommend preparing your peach cobbler unbaked as directed in the recipe below, and then baking it from frozen for about 20 minutes with the foil on top. Remove the foil, and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.

How to freeze peach cobbler

You can freeze pre-baked peach cobbler or unbaked peach cobbler in a glass or foil baking dish covered tightly with foil. Make sure to label your peach cobbler with labeling tape or a sharpie on the foil directly!

  • To reheat frozen peach cobbler that has already been baked, warm in the oven (at the temperature recommended in the recipe) with the foil left on top for about 10 minutes. Remove the foil, and bake until warmed through (about another 10-15 minutes).
  • To bake a frozen unbaked peach cobbler, bake it from frozen for about 20 minutes with the foil on top. Remove the foil, and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.

Ingredients

  • 4-6 peaches or enough to generously cover the bottom of your pan
  • 1/4 c. butter (+1 extra tsp) softened (if using unsalted butter, add a generous pinch of salt)
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Grease the bottom of an 8" square baking dish with 1 tsp butter.

  3. Combine the 1/4 c. softened butter with sugar, flour, and vanilla in a bowl. Rub between your fingers until all of the ingredients are well incorporated and crumbly. Set aside.

  4. Wash, peel and chop the peaches. Fill the bottom of the greased pan with peach slices, making sure you have enough slices to make at least a 1" layer of fruit. Crumble the topping evenly overtop.

  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the edges are just golden and the mixture is bubbly. Serve warm or cold.
