Easy Whipped Honey Butter [Recipe]

Whipped honey butter: one of those recipes you didn’t know you needed, but once you’ve tried it, you might find yourself dreaming of it over and over again.

I decided that I wanted to make this recipe because of a delicious experience of croissant with whipped butter and honey that I had in Germany some years ago. It was so melt-in-your-mouth, buttery delicious, I have found myself thinking about it ever since. I guess I figured it was time to bring some of that magic to my own table, which is where you find me today.

If you’re up a dream-come-true kind of breakfast, make my homemade croissants and serve them with this honey butter and a cup of good coffee.

Making whipped honey butter at home

Whipped butter is a really simple thing to make. All you have to do is beat regular, softened butter in an electric mixer on high speed. Once the butter is fluffy, with lots of air incorporated, it will become very light in color, easy to spread on bread, and silky smooth in texture.

Making honey butter is much the same process. The only difference is the addition of honey to the softened butter, which affects the color and texture just slightly. Personally, when making honey butter, I find that the finished product is less porous than whipped butter can sometimes be, making it appear more silky and smooth in texture.

Salted vs. unsalted butter + substitutes

For this recipe, I like to use salted butter because I appreciate the salty/sweet contrast. If you prefer, you can of course use unsalted butter with great results.

To make this recipe, use real butter with no substitutions; there truly is no *real* substitute for butter!

Does honey butter separate?

Honey butter will appear to separate when it is warmed. To prevent this, store it in the fridge or at moderate-cool room temperature.

Honey butter variations

This recipe is delicious with some simple additions. Try making this recipe with:

  • Cinnamon
  • Finely chopped or slivered nuts
  • Different varieties of honey, such as buckwheat honey

For the addition of nuts, stir the nuts in when the butter is fully whipped.

You could also add some other spices, of course, such as cardamom (for fragrance and flavor) or cayenne (for heat), but since those flavors can be overwhelming, I would recommend keeping them to a minimum.

Best ways to serve honey butter

I recommend serving this recipe on some quality bread. I love making (and eating!) homemade bread, and I’m very pleased that I can recommend some excellent recipe options to you. These are some of my favorites!

Making it beautiful

If you want a beautiful way to display your honey butter in little bowls or dishes, you can easily do so with a piping bag and star tip. For this, I recommend using a 12″ piping bag and a large star tip (all of them are so pretty- so take your pick which one!).

I also loved serving mine alongside my little ramekin full of honey with a honey dipper in it. So cute!

If you plan to pipe swirls of honey butter with a piping tip and bag, this is best done the day the butter is made for the smoothest looking result.
