Everything Bagel Seasoning [Recipe]

Bread, Food, Recipes, Savoury / Friday, April 26th, 2024

Today’s recipe is going to be one of those too-simple-to-seem necessary but very necessary things: Everything bagel seasoning.

Whether you like making everything bagels at home or not, this recipe is a great one to add to your cupboard for just about whatever you can dream up to use it on. For me, I love baking all kinds of great breads at home, and this savoury seasoning makes the best topping for just about anything bread related. It also makes a great addition to salads, fried rice, or honestly, whatever you’re feelin’.

Why you need this recipe

In the past few years, everything bagel seasoning seems to have picked up in popularity along with the rise of baking homemade bread (no pun intended).

You can pick this seasoning up pre-made just about anywhere; however, I don’t think people quite realize that the ingredients to make this at home are nothing magical! They are all just as easily available as the pre-made seasoning, and you can save quite a bit of money by making it yourself.

What is everything bagel seasoning made of?

Everything bagel seasoning is primarily a blend of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and dried onions and/or garlic. Some people add salt as well, but I have learned in my years of baking that anything baked with salt on it will sweat the next day and your baking will be wet. So, I have chosen to avoid this addition.

Why is it called everything bagel seasoning?

I think the idea is that “Everything bagels” are the savoury bagel option that have “A bit of everything in them.” Assorted seeds and savoury onion and garlic, all on the classic bagel; kind of the classic savoury option that is sure to please anyone!

Ways to use everything bagel seasoning

What is everything bagel seasoning good on, you ask? Honestly, use it however you jolly well want! Here are some ideas, though– just to get you thinking (use it as a topping on any of the following):

Should you toast the sesame seeds before making everything bagel seasoning?

I don’t because this topping is mostly used on baked goods, and oven toasts the seeds while they are baking. I also find that seeds tend to burn pretty easily, so I prefer to keep the seeds raw and then let them toast with my baking while they are in the oven, or let them toast while they fry in my food on the stovetop. If you are using your seasoning as a salad topping, go ahead and throw the sesame seeds in a frying pan for a couple of seconds, just until they are fragrant, if you prefer the flavour of toasted seeds. Then proceed to make the seasoning as directed below.

…That’s literally it!

Where do you get those little jars?

Everything Bagel Seasoning

Yield: 1-1/4 cups
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

This is the easy, cost effective way to make everything bagel seasoning with only 3 ingredients! (See recipe notes for variations.)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup poppy seeds
  • 1/4 cup dry minced onion

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl; mix until well combined.
  2. Store in a sealed bag, jar or container.

Notes

Everything bagel seasoning can also sometimes contain a few extra ingredients, such as black sesame seeds, dry minced garlic, and sea salt. I prefer to omit the salt (since it can make the dough wet during storage), and the other two additions are (in my opinion) delicious-- but unnecessary.

If you want to try making your seasoning mix with those ingredients, try the following ratios:

1/2 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup black sesame seeds
1/4 cup poppy seeds
1/4 cup dry minced onion
2 Tbsp dry minced garlic
1 tsp flaked sea salt
