Today I’m gonna teach you how to make pita chips. This delicious, quick homemade snack is easy to make, inexpensive, and a whole lot better for you than potato chips.
Want to see how they’re made? This post is for you!

What are pita chips?
Pita chips are crunchy chips made from traditional middle eastern pita bread. They are made by seasoning the surface of the bread with salt or other spices, and then baking it in the oven until it becomes crisp and crunchy.
A great way to use up older pita bread
This recipe is great because it’s not only super delicious and satisfying, it’s also a great way to use up older pita bread before it goes bad. Since pita is best on the day it is made, day-old or two-day-old pita bread can get pretty stale. Then eventually, it will develop mold if you don’t use it up.
This is the perfect way to use up “old” pita bread before it goes bad and enjoy it just as much as if it were fresh from the oven!
How to serve pita chips
Pita chips are delicious served with hummus or garlic sauce, making them a great snack or appetizer! Try any of the following as great options for serving your chips:
- Hummus
- Roasted red pepper hummus
- Black Bean Dip
- Refried beans
- Garlic sauce
- Cheesy artichoke dip
- Guacamole
- Cheese fondue
- Your favourite cream cheese spread

What kind of pita bread to use for this recipe
I like to make this recipe from traditional middle eastern pita bread. While you could make this recipe with another type of flatbread, thicker breads (like Greek pita), would be a little too hard once the chips are finished, making those types less ideal.
For best results, I recommend sticking with a thinner type of pita or flatbread.
How to store pita chips
When prepared properly, these chips will last for a good while without spoiling at room temperature. Store your pita chips in a sealed plastic bag or container to prevent them from going stale.
Can you make this recipe with tortillas?
You can! Although, you should know that the taste will be quite different. You can make chips using this recipe with any kind of soft tortilla, just keeping in mind that the baked chips will yield a different flavour than tortilla chips that you find in the store.

Ways to season pita chips
You can season your chips with any of your favourite spices, but I like to keep it fairly simple and mild. The simplest way to do it is just with salt and olive oil, but you can try any one of the following spices in addition, sprinkled lightly over top, with delicious results:
Salt + any of the following:

You will need:

Pita Chips
These easy, homemade pita chips make a great snack or appetizer, and they're a fantastic way to make sure old pita bread doesn't go bad!
Ingredients
- 5 whole pita breads
- 2-3 Tbsp olive oil
- salt
- pepper (optional)
- cumin (optional)
- paprika (optional) or cayenne, for spicy chips
- ground coriander (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
-
On a large non stick cookie sheet (or parchment lined cookie sheet), lay out the pita bread in one layer (making sure that they don't overlap much or at all). For 5 pitas, I use 2 standard sized cookie sheets to accommodate all of the bread.
-
Using a pastry brush, brush the tops of the pita bread with olive oil.
-
Sprinkle each pita generously with salt and lightly with other spices, if desired.
-
Bake the pitas for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow the pita to cool until crisp and hard. Break into pieces, and store in an airtight bag or container until serving.
-
Pita chips are delicious served plain or with your favourite spread or dip.
Recipe Notes
If you want your pita chips to look more “perfect” (less rustic), you can cut the pita bread into wedges after you season it (before you bake it), and then bake the chips. Check the chips after 3-5 minutes, to make sure they aren’t getting too brown.
