Okay, so this applesauce recipe is so simple to make that I almost feel embarrassed to post it… except that if you don’t know how to make it yet, the time has come, and your joy is about to multiply!
This is an all-season, all-time favourite that everybody needs to know how to make because… it is a staple of good food and the comforts of home. Makes your house smell like an autumn day, and makes you think of warm blankets and happiness.
Personally, I like to eat this stuff best when it’s hot and fresh – but! It’s also super delicious cold. Still, my best recommendation is to serve it hot, over a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast one day. So, so yummy and good. That winning combination made me wanna eat oatmeal as a child, which I hated. So, yes. This is magic.

Easy Homemade Applesauce
This recipe can be pureed, or served with bits of apple chunks. Sugar free and delicious, I love to serve this by itself or served over a fresh bowl of oatmeal.
Ingredients
- 10 apples chopped
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (or 2 cinnamon sticks, cooked with the applesauce and discarded afterwards)
Instructions
-
Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples into a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan.
-
Add the water and cinnamon; cook, covered, over medium-low heat until the apples break down and are very soft, stirring occasionally. Serve immediately, or you can store it in the fridge or freezer until using. Can also easily be canned for longer shelf life.
Recipe Notes
Note: If you prefer to purée this recipe, you can do that in the blender before, or after you cook it. I would prefer to blend everything together first, and then cook the apples down until they are light brown in colour, heated through, and fragrant.
This recipe can be eaten right away, it can be canned for longer storage, or it can be frozen for easy storage. I currently have some in my freezer and I’m very excited about that. 🙂
Also, in case you were wondering – yes, I made mine with chunks of apples and left it that way! (I hope the photos don’t look too weird.) But, as in the recipe notes – you can purée this recipe if you prefer! I just like the tart bits of apple in there. Also, if your apples are *too* tart – you can always add a little bit of sugar… but personally, I like it best without sugar since it’s healthier that way, and the apples usually have enough of their own sweetness to do the job well.
