Ok guys, it’s time for the best green smoothie you’ve ever had: today’s recipe is for this super simple, oh-so-delicious, kiwi honeydew smoothie bowl.
I’ll confess, spinach laden green smoothies that I’ve tried in the past have often come through feeling a little lack-lustre. I am the kind of person who loves a smoothie to be bursting with the flavour (and colour) of fresh fruit, and sometimes, if I’m honest, spinach smoothies are… kinda bland. At least the ones I’ve tried.
If that’s your story as well, I’m pleased to report that today’s the day that changes it all, folks. This kiwi honeydew smoothie bowl is the magic you’ve been waiting for.
What is a smoothie bowl?
A smoothie bowl is pretty much what it sounds like. Usually made with a nice, thick texture, it’s an icy cold smoothie poured into a bowl and topped with a bunch of fresh fruit, nuts, or seeds to give extra texture and heartiness to an already great breakfast. They’re beautiful, easy to make, and so, so delicious!
How to make an ice-cream-thick smoothie bowl
The secret to making a nice thick smoothie is frozen fruit. You can of course use ice to add some thickness and cold to your smoothie, but if you work with frozen fruit, you can get that spoonful-of-thick-icy-goodness texture which makes smoothie bowls so satisfying to eat.
Are smoothie bowls healthy?
Yes! Made with fresh fruit and probiotic rich yogurt (and then topped with a bunch of raw, healthy toppings), they are a great choice for your health. Obviously you don’t want to overdo it (fruit sugar is still sugar, after all); everything in moderation is always best. But as an addition to your diet, yes, smoothie bowls are a great option.
Ways to decorate a pretty smoothie bowl
Smoothie bowls can be decorated however you want them, but I really like to make a “Wreath” around half of the bowl with various toppings, or you can line up a bunch of fresh, pretty toppings in rows across the top of the bowl. It’s one of those things that’s pretty hard to mess up!
For this kiwi honeydew smoothie bowl, I have done the 1/2 wreath, arching around the side of the bowl– but also almost covering half of it, which I think is really pretty.
When to make smoothie bowls:
You can make them for breakfast, snacks, treats, or whatever you like. Honestly, they’re so easy to make and so delicious to eat that I say, make them whenever you think it would be a good idea. Odds are, you are right!
Recipe variations
It’s easy to create variations to the kiwi honeydew smoothie bowl by mixing it up in a number of ways.
- Try adding additional fruits
- Substitute some fruits (just keep them green or white if you want the colour to stay like this)
- Use yogurt, kefir, or almond milk in place of the coconut milk
- Add some matcha green tea powder
- Add collagen or whey protein powder
- Top the smoothie with your favourite nuts, fruits, and seeds!
Before we get to the recipe, here’s a warning:
