Here’s yet another refreshing smoothie for these hot summer days: my blueberry blackberry smoothie recipe!
A little background on me
Growing up, fresh or frozen fruit and yogurt were not something we typically had in abundance. As one of 12 kids, when we had those things, we were careful to share to make sure everyone got some and that there was enough to go around.
I actually love that about my childhood; sharing was a normal part of life, and when we did get to have “lots” of something (which did happen sometimes), it always felt like a super special occasion, and we learned how to be grateful. I hope that I can pass on that attitude to my children; that they would grow up to be thankful for the good that they have, and when it is abundant, to see it as the generous gift of God that it is!
Smoothies: a reason to be thankful
Since abundance of certain types of food were rare in our home, smoothies were definitely a rare occurrence. I have a few treasured memories as a kid of my mom making a smoothie for us and dividing it between a bunch of small drinking glasses for me and my siblings to share. Then, if the occasion was extra special, we’d get our very own bendy straw. Those were sweet times.
Why I love this recipe
Creating this blueberry blackberry smoothie recipe, as simple as it may be, was special for me because it reminded me of my past and gave me another reason to enjoy thinking back. Not only that, but it’s also completely delicious. Since there are so few ingredients, the boldness of the berry flavour has lots of room to shine. I also love the rich purple colour that these two berries give the finished product.
How to make your smoothie ice-cream thick
The best way to get super thick smoothies is to use frozen fruit. You can make a smoothie with fresh fruit and crushed ice, which is also completely delicious– but the yield of that method will be a thinner drinking consistency rather than that spoon-full-of goodness ice cream texture.
Smoothie substitutions
Since this recipe is so simple, you can easily substitute either type of fruit out for another kind, or even sub the yogurt for kefir or another kind of yogurt, or you could use any type of your favourite milk in its place. Just keep in mind that thinner ingredients will yield a slightly thinner smoothie.
Smoothie additions
A lot of people love to add protein or whey powder, extra fruits and berries. Since smoothie recipes are pretty easy to adjust, you can pretty safely say that most typical smoothie additions will work well with this recipe.
If you want to add protein, whey protein, or collagen powder to this recipe, feel free! Those all make great additions. Just note that flavoured protein powders will affect the flavour of the finished product, possibly even significantly.

Blueberry Blackberry Smoothie
This easy 4-ingredient smoothie is a beautiful, delicious blend to boost your day. For best results, use frozen fruit.

- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt or coconut milk for a vegan option
Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients in high-powered blender. Pulse 3-4 times, and then blend until smooth.
Recipe Notes
This smoothie is best made with frozen fruit. If you don’t have it frozen ahead of time, add 6 ice cubes* to this recipe, pulse 4-6 times, and then blend until smooth.
