This quick, fruity green smoothie is a favourite. Kiwi gives it that tart, zippy fruity taste, and honeydew is sweet, cool and refreshing. Banana adds a little extra sweetness to offset the kiwi, thickening the whole thing a bit, and then the addition of spinach gives it some extra nutrition and colour.
I tend to have mixed feelings about green smoothies, since they are often packed with vegetables – which is great for your health, but… fruit! I love fruit, and I always feel like a smoothie needs to be fruity. Am I alone in this? Granted, I have had some great veggie-based green smoothies in the past (I’m not being negative on those), but my favourite tasting ones are always heavily off-set with fruit.
At any rate, here’s a simple, 5-ingredient smoothie to bring you that flavour-packed fruitiness along with the raw spinach goodness and colour. This particular one is made with coconut milk, which complements the flavour really nicely and also makes it vegan; which is great if you follow a vegan diet, or if you have trouble with dairy products.
I like this smoothie best blended with frozen fruit so that it gets that good, thick consistency – As pictured, however, I blended it with fresh fruit and a few ice cubes (see my recipe note), which made it a really beautiful drinking consistency: thick enough to still be smoothie-esq, but thin enough to drink through a straw. Here’s the recipe!
Kiwi Honeydew Smoothie
This brilliant green kiwi smoothie is vegan, super fruity, and packed with nutrition. Kiwi gives it a little extra zip, honeydew melon makes it refreshing, and spinach makes the colour perfect.
Ingredients
- 1 cup kiwi, peeled and chopped frozen (about 3 whole)
- 1 cup honeydew melon chunks frozen
- 2 handfuls raw spinach large
- 1 banana peeled
- 1/4 cup coconut milk or cream
Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients in high-powered blender. Pulse 3-4 times, and then blend until smooth.
Recipe Notes
This smoothie is best made with frozen kiwi and frozen honeydew melon. If you don't have it frozen ahead of time, add 6 ice cubes to this recipe, pulse 4-6 times, and then blend until smooth.
Next time I think I’d like to try it with a scoop of Matcha green tea powder… What do you think?
Back soon! Cheers,
–Naomi
This tastes great! However, I think it needs more liquid, and maybe the greens should be blended with the liquid first. My Oster blender struggled to get it pulverized.
