Here is a fruity green treat that is sure to be a favourite: my kiwi honeydew smoothie recipe! Kiwi gives it that tart, zippy, fruity taste, and honeydew is sweet, cool and refreshing. Banana adds a little extra sweetness to offset the kiwi, thickening the whole thing a bit, and then the addition of spinach gives the whole thing some extra nutrition and colour.
How to make a delicious green smoothie
I tend to have mixed feelings about green smoothies, since they are often packed with vegetables – which is great for your health, but… fruit! I love fruit, and I always feel like a smoothie needs to be fruity. Am I alone in this? Granted, I have tried some great veggie-based green smoothies in the past (I’m not being negative on those), but my favourite tasting ones are always heavily off-set with fruit.
If you’re with me on that, here’s a simple, 5-ingredient smoothie to bring you that flavour-packed fruitiness along with the raw spinach goodness and colour. This particular one is made with coconut milk, which complements the flavour really nicely and also makes it vegan; which is great if you follow a vegan diet, or if you have trouble with dairy products.
Getting the right smoothie consistency
I like this smoothie best blended with frozen fruit so that it gets that good, thick consistency. For this post, however, I blended it with fresh fruit and a few ice cubes (see my recipe notes), which made it a really beautiful drinking consistency: thick enough to still be smoothie-esq, but thin enough to drink through a straw.
Best smoothie substitutions
For this recipe, you can be pretty flexible, except that you should try to remember that part of what makes this smoothie so incredible is its colour. So, if you go adding raspberries, don’t expect to have a green raspberry smoothie… It will definitely come out looking brown! Other types of fruit can be substituted for those in this recipe, however, and in the end you will, in fact, still get a smoothie.
The better area to make substitutions in this recipe, in my opinion, is with the coconut milk. You can easily sub that out for yogurt, kefir, almond milk, or any other type of milk that you enjoy.
Best smoothie additions
Try adding in some green apples, or any of the following:
Just bear in mind that the addition of sweetened protein powders etc will sweeten the flavour of your smoothie a lot, and it goes without saying… Unless you’re trying to make something Shrek would be proud of, you should probably avoid chocolate flavoured anything for this smoothie (both for the sake of colour and flavour).

- 1 cup honeydew melon chunks frozen
- 2 handfuls raw spinach large

- 1/4 cup coconut milk or cream
Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients in high-powered blender. Pulse 3-4 times, and then blend until smooth.

I didn’t do it this time, but I think matcha green tea powder would make a great addition to this smoothie. What do you think? Leave me a note in the comments!

This tastes great! However, I think it needs more liquid, and maybe the greens should be blended with the liquid first. My Oster blender struggled to get it pulverized.
