On hot summer days, few things beat sitting out on the porch with a thick, frosty smoothie bursting with the flavours of the season’s best fruit. My strawberry raspberry smoothie recipe is just that!

About this recipe

For whatever reason, strawberries have always been a huge “Summer nostalgia” thing for me. They remind me of little kids’ fingers and strawberry-tinted cheeks, of summer nights with fireflies, and of Independence Day celebrations. Also, they’re pretty… And if you know me, you know that I kind of have a thing for pretty food.

This strawberry raspberry smoothie recipe is a blend of lots of good things: frostiness, fruitiness, prettiness, and easy-ness. It is only 4 ingredients, and it’s packed with the flavours of fresh summer fruit! You can make this smoothie to be a thick or thin consistency, or even make it vegan by using coconut milk in place of the yogurt.

What makes a really thick smoothie?

The key to a good thick textured smoothie is making it with frozen fruit and yogurt, rather than fresh fruit and milk. Frozen fruit are what give it that thick, ice-creamy texture, and yogurt (being thicker than milk) is the perfect complement to that. I also love the addition of banana for an extra bit of full-bodied thickness.

Can I make substitutions in this recipe?

You can pretty much sub any kind of fruit for the two listed in this recipe, or just use all of one type (such as all strawberries or all raspberries). Smoothies can be made with just about anything in them, and they are pretty forgiving when you’re missing an ingredient. Milk, kefir, or any milk substitute can also be a good choice in place of the yogurt; however, keep in mind that your texture might end up a little thinner if you do decide to do that.

Are there any good additions for this recipe?

Absolutely! If you want to make this more of a fruit medley smoothie, just use a total of 2 cups of your favourite fruit mix. You can also add in protein powder, whey protein powder, collagen powder or whatever you like. Just remember that some of those powders are quite sweet and will change the overall flavour quite a bit.

Is it easy to simplify this recipe?

Yes! As I mentioned above, you can just use all of one type of fruit rather than the two berries listed here. In other words, use 2 cups of one fruit (strawberries or raspberries), instead of using 1 cup of each type.

Should I use plain or vanilla yogurt in my smoothie?

My preference is to use plain, since it is lower in sugar and I don’t personally love the competing flavour of vanilla yogurt with the fresh robust flavour of the fruits I am using. In fact, plain yogurt will make the whole thing more tart, with a focus more on the fruit in it than anything else.
